Checkpoint Charlie and the KaltKrieg Box

So anyway to begin with the KaltKrieg box looks at the cold war from east berlin, but also talks about other acts of war throughout the years after the cold war, it is very interesting to look around and is located on the other other side of Checkpoint Charlie and the Mauerhaus museum.


Now Checkpoint Charlie, this was the point, in which you checked in pretty much before entering into the American sector of Berlin, this has now become a tourist attraction, so it is always busy, there is also a museum just further down a bit that you can also check out

Deutsches Historisches Museum

The German history museum connects the history of both the past and also the present history of Germany, but also that of Berlin as well, it is a pretty amazing Museum that spreads out amongst two different buildings

This museum is located along the Unter den Linden, close to the Berliner Dom

it is open everyday expect on christmas between the hours of 10-18 Uhr

The Deutsches Historisches Museum was founded by the then Federal Republic of Germany and the Land Berlin in 1987 on the occasion of the 750th anniversary celebration of Berlin. The buildings and collections of the Museum für Deutsche Geschichte (MfDG), the central historical museum of the GDR, were transferred to the ownerschip of the Deutsches Historisches Museum within the framework of the contract on German reunification. Thus with reunification in 1990, the Deutsches Historisches Museum became the museum for the history of all parts of Germany.

When i visited this museum, i didn't see everything that was there on offer, so it is on my list of somewhere to go back to when i go back to Berlin again. 


there are so many different exhibits there portraying amazing things of the history of Germany 

Topographie of Terrors

The Topographie of Terrors ( Located on Wilhelm and Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse)  is a place where it i free too enter, the land that the building is located on was once the site of the SS and Gestapo headquarters 1933-1945.there is still apart of the building which is that of the basement which was the cells that prisoners were held in, this part also has part of the Berlin Wall running over it.

inside the building there is just so much interesting information in the building just following along through ever part of the Nazi regime but also of the roles that the SS and also the Gestapo had during wwii.

Schloss Sanssouci

Is such a remarkable palace, located in Potsdam about an hour out of Berlin  with the surrounding gardens but then also if you take the chance to head inside for a look around, there is such an amazing and very interesting story behind this wonderful palace.

 This was built between 1745 and 1747 and was designed by Friedrich the Great, it was used at his summer residence and also his favourite place to get away for a while with his many dogs, which just like him are also buried at on the grounds, where people all over Germany who come to visit will place a potato on his grave as a thank you, as when Friedrich the Great was king he brought potatoes to the country, and planted them in his own personal garden, and had a few guards standing guard over it at night,, he had told them to look the other way, when people would come in and take some potatoes for their own use.


It was completed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff based on the king's designs.

it is worth coming here for a visit, i went as a Potsdam tour, where i saw other areas as well which i shall talk about later in another blog. I would even recommend going on a tour, and you found more of the story behind this place, the one i went on was with Sandmans new berlin tours.

Museumsinsel

Museumsinsel also called Museum Island  has 5 large museums situated on it that hold so many different artefacts in each of the amazing looking buildings, they are located at the end of under den linden, and is also where the Berliner Dom is.

The 5 museums are the
Bode Museum, which was originally called the Kaiser Friedrich Museum  and was constructed between 1887 and 1904 by Ernst Eberhard von Ihne. was named the Bode museum after Wilhelm von Bode  which holds a lot of religious style of artefacts but is amazing all he same :) 

there is also the Pergamon Museum this is a pretty awesome little museum, with just the most amazing stuff inside of it, like parts of a Greek temple and many  more. it was designed by Alfred Messel it was constructed by Ludwig Hoffmann between 1910 and 1930. 

The Neues Museum which has a pretty good Egyptian Exhibition. this was built between 1843 and 1855 to the designs of Friedrich August Stuler, holds many exhibits for example museum of pre history and early history 

Now for the two museums i didn't get time to go and see 


Alte Nationalgalerie which was built around 1867 and 1876 built by Johann Heinrich Strack this museum hold pictures and sculptures of the 19th Century 

Lastly Altes Museum built 1823 to 1830 by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and holds a lot of classical objects.
