Casurina Coastal Reserve

 

 

 

This is such a lovely and beautiful  area, the beach is so long and beautiful, looking out towards the vast blue water of the Arafura Sea. <3

 

This is a reserve which protects about 1500ha of costal habitats between the estuaries of Rapid Creek and Buffalo. The Larrakia people speak for this area, so therefore it is also a sacred area.

fishing is allowed here but you can not disturb rocks or remove shellfish .

there are a few things that you can see like WWII artillery observation posts, and also Old man rock (Dariba Nunggalinya) is an important cultural site.

WWII Oil Storage Tunnels

The WWII Oil storage tunnel, were built during the war although did not get completed till after the darwin bombings, so these tunnels never got used, there are a few other tunnels around Darwin but they are closed off to the public, these tunnels are located opposite the waterfront

along the inside of the main and larger tunnel, there are pictures and details about the Darwin bombings, 

you can either check the tunnels out by yourself or go along with a wwii aimed tour. 

Stolpersteine

So what is exactly Stolpersteine, i found out about what they were exactly, on the Third Reich tour tour that we went on, and when we came up to our last stop of the tour which was within the Jewish Quarter of Berlin,

So these little gold plaques which can also be found all over Germany, as well as many other places within Europe as well.


What do they say on them?

Will each one has the name of someone who lived in the building or house that they are placed in front of if there is proof that they lived there,  also written  on them, is the date they were born, when and where they got deported, how and when they had died.

I think that this is actually such a wonderful idea that has been created

Treptower Park and the Soviet Memorial

Treptower Park, is quite a large park, where it begins by running along the river Spree, where there are many boat trips, that have their starting point there for cruising along the river, and seeing Berlin, from the waters view,

Treptower is quite a lovely little park, great place to relax, have a picnic and to also catch up with friends as well :)

Now the Soviet war Memorial that is located at Treptower park,

my first impressions of this was at just how huge it looked, because this is the first time i have seen a war memorial this big before,

there is a lot of detail gone in to the making of this memorial

Here some details of  it taken from the Visit Berlin webpage

100,000 square metres the largest of its kind in Germany. The facility, also serving as cemetery for 5,000 Soviet solders, was built between 1946 and 1948. Memorial slabs and frescos depicting the course of the war are arranged in long tiers of straight lines. The imposing figure on top of the mausoleum shows a soldier carrying a rescued German child. It is a memorial for the app. 80,000 Red Army soldiers killed during the conquest of Berlin in World War II. 40,000 cubic metres of granite were used in the construction. Aside from the war cemetery in Niederschönhausen, the facility is the largest Soviet war cemetery in Germany as well as the largest anti-fascist memorial in Western Europe.
